MT. PLEASANT, SC – A Republican Debate watch party took place tonight at Cinnebarre in Mount Pleasant.
Trump announced this week he would boycott tonight’s Fox News debate after citing “unfair” treatment from the debate host, Megyn Kelly.
Instead of attending the debate, Trump attended an event with veterans at nearby Drake University.
Other GOP candidates see Trump’s move as a welcome opportunity to emerge from the long shadow the billionaire has cast over the race, while also hoping it might damage his standing with Iowa voters.
Tonight at Cinnebarre, Chair of the Charleston County Republican Party, Larry Kobrovski, polled the people in attendance.
Of those who attended the watch party Thursday night, the majority said Marco Rubio won the debate with Ted Cruz coming in second, and then Jeb Bush in third.
When asked who they would like to see become president; the majority of people said Ted Cruz, then Marco Rubio, and then Donald Trump came in third amongst those polled in the Lowcountry.
Marco Rubio supporter, Hunter Nieto, told News 2, “This last debate it’s kind of a vital one. Especially with Trump not being there, it gives Rubio a chance to pick up the pace.
Ray Nash is the former sheriff of Dorchester County and the state co-chair of the Ted Cruz campaign and when asked about Trump’s absence said, “I think Cruz is going to be spot-on. There’s no question about it. I think he’s going to rise to the challenge and we are going to see him shine.”
