Creative, energetic, engaging, fun, just a few words students use to describe their experience with Beech Hill Elementary teacher Mrs. Elizabeth Norman. We’re in Dorchester District Two for our Cool School Teacher of the week.
A part of the Beech Hill family for three years, Mrs. Elizabeth Norman is the STEAM lab also known as the Renaissance Room teacher. The Renaissance Room is a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math learning lab where students create codes for robots, design structures, and much more. Her room has become very popular for students and teachers because of its high level of engagement, energy and excitement. She bounces around the room a lot, and works with other teachers to tie lessons together.
Mrs. Norman says she works hard to create an environment where critical thinking, creativity, and communication thrive. She says, “That light up moment, that moment they realize they got it, that’s what I live for as a teacher. I try to create an authentic hands on situation where it’s fun but it’s challenging. They have to use critical thinking and creativity while collaborating together as a group to problem solve.” Fourth-grade student Jackson Ross says, “She’s been a really great teacher to me, and I really appreciate her doing STEAM lab. She’s so creative and nice.”
Third grade teacher Paula Luciano says, “I think she’s a strong collaborator. She always ask what are we doing in class, and takes what we’re doing in class, and adds it in here. She’ll add an element of fun, so she’ll add it with robotics, add coding. She’ll have it where they can do creative story telling with their iPads. She always makes sure she’s extending our learning.”
This is Mrs. Norman’s tenth year as a teacher. She also taught fourth grade for several years.
Congratulations Mrs. Elizabeth Norman!
