Waccamaw High School is an award winning school with a strong, rigorous academic environment. We’re on Pawleys Island with our Cool School of the week.
Music fills the air at Waccamaw High School in Georgetown county. The school has an award winning choir, which brings so much joy, Chorus teacher Sylvia Plyler says, “To me its like putting paint on the fence at school. It makes everything come alive for them. It a a place to connect.” The school’s speech and debate team is award winning. Students and staff have a lot to be proud of including an award winning student council. Student government vice president Matt Maixner says, “Student council, we’re actually represented on the state level it’s called the SCASC, South Carolina Association of Student Councils, and we won the gavel which is the highest award at the convention 13 years in a row.
Everyone is real close. We have a lot of school spirit I can tell you that first hand ,and everyone is very passionate about what they do here.”
“We have lots of great different things going on in our school,” says Vice Principal Adam George. “We have a competitive speech and debate class and they compete nationally. We have our chorus that is wonderful, that goes out in the community. They are a great beacon of our school. We have our Project Lead the Way classes. Those classes are STEM classes. We have Intro to Engineering, Aerospace engineering, new class this year with a partnership with Boeing. We have drones, we have flight simulators, we have 3D printers. We have a lot of cool things going on here at Waccamaw high school.”
Students are excited about the school’s Project Lead the Way class. Eleventh grade student Caleb Michael says, “I love this class. It’s really fun. We do a lot of crazy fun, just have fun in here.” Teacher Emilee Fidler says, “We’ve got the flight simulator where the students use joy sticks, and they fly with instruments, like they’re flying a real airplane. We have an opportunity coming up soon where they will get to go in an airplane and fly along with a pilot if they choose to to see how what we’re doing now applies to a pilots life, and what they would be doing if they chose that career path.”
Waccamaw has twenty-four varsity sports. They have consistently scored “Excellent” on the state report card with students scoring above the state average. WHS offers a wide variety of extra-curricular clubs that focus on community involvement as well as building leadership in students.
