COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCBD) – Authorities in Colleton County arrested two people for involuntary manslaughter following a physical incident this week.

Deputies on Wednesday were dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of Macon Lane in response to a physical altercation.

Upon arrival, authorities found an unresponsive victim at the residence. Colleton County Fire Rescue attempted to perform CPR on the individual, but their attempt was unsuccessful.

All suspected individuals cooperated with authorities regarding questioning about the incident, but deputies were unable to place a hold on them due to the unknown cause of death at the time.

Both were released from custody.

The victim’s body was transported to MUSC where an autopsy was performed. The results determined the cause of death was due to blunt force trauma to the head.

Suspects Joseph Thomas Benton and Rebecca Beard have been placed under arrest and charged with involuntary manslaughter.
