Earth Heart Growers connects kids and the earth

CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – Earth Heart Growers is a non-profit organization started right here in the Lowcountry connecting kids and the earth. The organization was created to support Charleston public school children and their well-being.

The group is currently in three Lowcountry schools, Malcolm Hursey Elementary in North Charleston, Montessori Community in West Ashley and Murray Lasaine on James Island. They provide in-school gardening, cooking, baking and marketing lessons while emphasizing sustainable practices. The group teaches the kids to grow food from seeds and how to prepare the food they’ve grown. But they also grow other plants and create products such as soap and body scrub that aren’t for consumption. And they even hold a market, giving the kids a chance to see how to sell the food they’ve grown and the products they’ve made from the plants.

Earth Heart Growers work with local organic farm, Joseph Fields. Many of the children have the opportunity to visit to get a first hand look at a working farm and learn from a 3rd generation organic, local farmer.
