The best teachers are those who have learned lessons first hand.
Penny Isop will tell you with a smile on her face that she is a teacher and student. Cancer treatment in New York takes her away from her Mount Pleasant home for weeks but Penny has a home away from home.
It’s modeled after the Charleston Hope Lodge, a place that Penny spends time even though it’s not what her doctor ordered.
A friendly smile, a warm greeting, that’s what Penny Isop offers to everyone who walks into the Charleston Hope Lodge at the corner of Ashley and Calhoun Streets. She has spent hundreds of hours volunteering here. Preparing meals, hosting parties, and making this comfortable home-away-from-home for people undergoing cancer treatment.
While undergoing treatment for cancer Penny Isop has been through the cancer treatment process, in fact, she is still in it.
She saw a similar facility while traveling through Australia and New Zealand with the People to People Ambassador program. After her own family was touched by cancer she established the very first Hope Lodge in Charleston. There are now more than 30 Hope Lodge facilities in the United States.
An incredible woman recognizing the vision and sacrifice of other incredible women, both committed to helping others, offering hope.
