CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — American Red Cross disaster-trained volunteers are assisting a family on Wadmalaw Island after their home was damaged by fire.

St. Johns Fire Department responded to the blaze on Maybank Highway.

The Red Cross officials say the organization is helping the family of three providing financial assistance for essentials, such as food and clothing, and comfort kits containing personal hygiene items.

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and as families begin to prep their Thanksgiving meals, the Red Cross has steps people can follow to stay safe when cooking this holiday weekend. Easy precautions include using a timer as a reminder that the oven is on and keeping kids and pets at least three feet away from the stove. Visit redcross.org/sc for more Thanksgiving cooking tips.
