Former Mayor Joe Riley to discuss race in America at Emanuel AME

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Former Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., is preparing to hold a discussion on race in America Thursday night.

The discussion set to take place on April 13 at 5 p.m. will be held at Emanuel AME church, the site of the Charleston Church shooting. Congressman James Clyburn will be the guest speaker.

The 74-year-old is teaching a class titled Old South City, New South Revival Political Leadership in Charleston, South Carolina this semester at The Citadel.

The class will dive into Charleston’s transformation from a sleepy coastal town into an international tourist destination, a major economic engine for the region and a center for global trade, according to the military college.

The discussion is open to the public.
