Gas leak closes downtown streets

News

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A gas leak closed a number of streets in downtown Charleston early Friday.

Authorities were alerted to the leak just after 2 a.m. on January 5.

As of 4:30 a.m., emergency crews had blocked Meeting Street between Broad Street and Ladson Street.   Tradd Street was also closed between King and Meeting.

Several firefighters remain on scene.

According to Eric Boomhower at SCE&G, the utility hopes to have service restored by 9 a.m. Crews will likely be on scene for some time as they continue to make repairs.

It is not known at this time how many customers were affected or whether the gas leak was caused by a weather-related problem. Officials say it was caused by material failure.

No evacuations have been reported.

As of 6:00 p.m., crews were still working, and the area was still blocked off.
