Reality Check

Charleston DUI stats behind new chief's push to crack down

Charleston has a DUI problem, and Charleston's new police chief, Luther Reynolds, is making it a priority.

The Charleston Police Department does not call many press conferences to talk about DUI arrests.

However, in the wake of the suspected DUI killing of an 11-year-old girl in Downtown Charleston, Reynolds called us to the scene at Cannon Park.

"This was preventable, and should have never happened," Reynolds said.

Chief Reynolds laid out a renewed focus on dangerous drivers in his new city.

The numbers back the chief's assertion that something needs to be done:

The chief announced the creation of a committee that was already in the works before the July 10th tragedy. That committee will be made up of representatives from different agencies within the city. So far, they haven't set a date for the first meeting.
