RESTAURANT REPORT CARD: Downtown seafood restaurant, Mt. Pleasant Mexican restaurant get B-grades

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCBD) -- Department of Health and Environmental Control inspectors visited restaurants all over the Lowcountry this week to assign a health grade.

Hyman’s Seafood downtown received a B-grade August 8.

The DHEC inspector observed an employee on the cell phone,then put gloves on to work with food without washing hands.

Other observations include:

-No hot water at two service stations.

-Cold foods were kept too warm. Shrimp, scallops, and raw chicken were reported at 60 degrees or above. They should be 41 degrees or below.

-Fruit flies and roaches were found throughout the facility.

A follow-up inspection should happen by August 16.

Guadalajara Bar and Grill in Mount Pleasant received a B-grade August 6.

According to the DHEC report, no hand washing was observed during the inspection. Staff entered kitchen from the outside and handled food without washing hands.

The report also noted the can opener had excess food debris build-up and rust on the blade.

Dishes and utensils were stored with particles and grease.

Cold foods were kept above 41 degrees.

Cleaning chemicals were stored next to food ingredients and equipment.

Large food bins used to store chips and ingredients were found soiled with food debris. Also, grease and food build-up were found in other areas.

A follow-up inspection should happen by August 16.

UPDATE: Senor Tequila in Mount Pleasant now has an A-grade after previously receiving a C-grade.
