IOP Connector now open following deadly crash involving officer, moped driver


ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCBD) — The Isle of Palms Connector was closed in both directions as of Thursday morning following a deadly crash involving a police officer and a moped driver.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash that happened at 5:13 a.m. on Thursday on the IOP Connector near SC 517.

A moped driver, later identified as Phillip Wallace, 51, from Mount Pleasant, struck the back of an IOP patrol car that was parked on the should of the road, according to troopers. Wallace was ejected and landed in the roadway, before being struck by another vehicle that was traveling southbound on the connector.

Troopers identified the driver of that vehicle as Robert Abel, of Isle of Palms. Abel was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and had no reported injuries.

Wallace was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials announced at 8:41 a.m., the Connector reopened.
