Thursday night the Finance Committee for the Charleston County Council begins talks about body camera funding coming from the SC Department of Public Safety.
The Public Safety Coordinating Council oversees the funding and disbursement of the body worn camera fund. The SCPSCC was mandated by law to establish a process for the application and disbursement of the funds to state and local law enforcement agencies, Attorney General’s Office, solicitors and public defenders.
In December, eligible agencies were notified of the process for making application for the funding. Funding for the BWC fund for more than 300 eligible agencies totals $3.4 million for 2015 and $2.4 million in recurring funds for subsequent years.
While there is limited funding available, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety told the I-Team every effort was made to ensure the funds are distributed in a fair and equitable manner and to ensure that as many eligible entities as possible receive some share of funding for BWC, storage and maintenance.
Initially departments submitted their policies and guidelines for body cameras to the Law Enforcement Training Council. Those policies had to be approved before they would be eligible for state funding.
After that, agencies had until April 29th to submit an application for funding to SCDPS.
