Local News

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – A bond court hearing is expected Thursday for a man involved in a robbery that turned into a shootout with police in North Charleston.

John Whitlock, 19, now faces four charges including two counts of armed robbery.

Police say he robbed a woman and got away with her purse around 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Whitlock then reportedly carjacked and stole an SUV from an apartment complex and crashed into a pick-up truck at the intersection of Rivers and McMillian Avenue.

Officers saw him behind Restaurant Depot where we’re told he presented a gun and shots were exchanged.

SLED is now investigating the incident which is the protocol for officer-involved shootings.

It is unclear if Whitlock was hit by any of that gunfire, but he was taken to MUSC for an evaluation.

No officers were injured. Count on us for updates as we learn more from today’s bond hearing.
