DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Emergency personnel responded to a reported structure fire in downtown Charleston earlier today.

According to the Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch, Charleston Police and Fire Departments responded to 48 Smith Street on Friday, July 14 at 3:20 p.m. Authorities say the fire had spread throughout the home upon arrival.

Authorities say the home was made of wood and very old.

Along with Charleston City Fire, North Charleston, Saint Andrews, James Island, and Mount Pleasant fire departments all responded.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the one residence. A large feat, given that the home was connected to two others.

Two firefighters and one citizen were taken to the hospital. Authorities say the woman re-entered the home while the fire was burning to rescue a cat.

Power was cut to the block. As of 10:30 p.m., crews were still on scene and power had not be restored.Keep checking counton2.com for real-time updates on this story. To get breaking news alerts, download the free News 2 App for iPhone or Android. You can also sign up for email alerts.
