Authorities responding to “aircraft emergency” near Mount Pleasant airport

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCBD) – Authorities are responding to a reported “aircraft emergency” near the Mount Pleasant Regional Airport.

According to dispatch, the call came in at 3:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Faison Road in Mount Pleasant.

Charleston County Aviation Authority was notified that a small Piper aircraft while attempting to Land at Mount Pleasant Regional Airport, ran off the runway coming to rest in a semi-marsh area, according to Spokesperson Caroline Axman.

The pilot was the only individual on the aircraft and walked away unharmed.  FAA has been notified and is working with CCAA Police and Operations in removing the aircraft from the scene.

Due to the incident the runway is currently closed and will reopen once the aircraft is safely relocated.
