Mount Pleasant, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston county School District, Constituent District 2, is rezoning schools in Mount Pleasant as they work to determine which areas could be zoned to the new Lucy Beckham High School.
On Monday night, parents and students from Belle Hall Elementary School gathered at the site of the new school to show their support. Count on 2’s, Taylor Murray spoke with some of these parents who say they hope to be zoned for the new school.
Wanting to be zoned for Lucy Beckham High School that is set to open in the 2020-2021 School year, parents & students of Belle Hall Elementary School walking and biking to the site of the new school.
“It doesn’t make sense for us to travel all the way to the new Wando. We should be here at Lucy Beckham, because we are just a walk away, a bike away,” One parent said.
For the past year, The Charleston county School District, Constituent District 2, has considered dozens of proposals of areas that could be re-zoned to this new school. The final decision has not been made.
This group of Belle Hall Elementary School parents say that they believe their kids should be able to attend Lucy Beckham High School because of proximity.
“It’s about the kids. It’s not about anything else than our kids going to our neighborhood school— one mile from our house,” One parent said.
They say that this will be their closest high school and share concerns over the proposals that zone their kids for a high school further from home.
“So, for us, we’d be one of the furthest communities zoned for Wando, if we did end up going to Wando. And there is nothing wrong with Wando, it’s a wonderful school. It’s just that this is our neighborhood school, and this is what we want for our kids,” One parent said.
One parent saying that she’s concerned over one of the plans on the table that would zone for students from Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms to attend Lucy Beckham High School versus her children who live in walkable and bikeable distance to the school.
“It would not be fair based on past zoning to take the Islands, Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms and allow them to come and exclude all of Belle Hall,” Kristin Adams said.
Uniting together, showing their support for this neighborhood school— They say they’re hoping this will persuade the school district to vote for the plan that will zone their kids to Lucy Beckham High School.
The Charleston County School District, Constituent Disrict 2, will hold a community meeting on Tuesday, May 14th, 2019 at Moultrie Middle School to listen to feeback on rezoning of Mount Pleasant High Schools for the 2020-2021 School Year. 6-7pm.
