SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C (WCBD) – Heading home from a Memorial Day beach trip proved to be quite the ordeal for those who chose to visit Sullivan’s Island due to malfunctions with the Ben Sawyer Bridge that caused it to close for hours.
The bridge reopened to vehicular traffic around 9:20 p.m. on Monday.
According to the Town of Sullivan’s Island, the bridge will remain closed to watercraft until further notice.
They say that the malfunction with the bridge stemmed from the extreme heat over the past several of days causing the concrete to expand to the point where it was not possible to close the bridge.
To resolve the issue, a portion of the expansion joint was removed.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation and the Awendaw-McClellanvile Fire District Water Tender team were on scene assisting to resolve the issues with the bridge.
