MONCK CORNER, S.C.(WCBD) – Berkeley County Water and Sanitation customers will see a 10% water rate increase on their upcoming November statement. With the increase, the average customer using 7,000 gallons of water will see an increase of $2.94 on their monthly bill, according to Public Information Officer Hannah Moldenhauer.
Sewer rates and late fees will not be changed, according to the news release.
Berkeley County landfill will increase some disposal fees and the following increases will be effective October 1, 2018, Moldenhauer stated.
- The landfill will increase its fee for construction debris disposal to $36 per ton. This is a $4 increase, up from $32 per ton.
- The landfill will increase its fee for passenger and truck tire disposal to $175 per ton. This is a $68 increase, up from $107 per ton. Citizens can still bring up to five tires daily, without rims and wheels, for free to any of the County’s nine convenience centers.
- Berkeley County has increased its water impact fee, effective immediately. This increase applies to any new water service. The new fee is now $2,200, up from $1,350.
These changes come with Berkeley County Council’s approval of the 2018-2019 BCWS budget, that was passed on September 10, 2018, according to the news release.
“The rate and fee increases are necessary to keep pace with the growth in Berkeley County,” said Berkeley County Water and Sanitation Executive Director Douglas Smits. “The landfill fee adjustments will help the County to more effectively manage the volume we’re taking-in at the landfill. With the water rate adjustments, we will continue to operate as efficiently as possible while providing high quality water. Importantly, the rate increase will also support the maintenance and improvement of existing infrastructure.”
