Berkeley County burglary suspect arrested in Columbia

CROSS, S.C. (WCBD) —  The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office arrested the person who they say is responsible for several burglaries in Cross.

Authorities say on Sunday, January 28, there were several burglaries to businesses in Cross. Video footage helped identify Illya Laron Wright, 41, of Columbia as the suspect. 

“After working all facets of this investigation, 5 warrants were obtained for the arrest of Wright relating to these burglaries,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Wright was located and taken into custody on March 27 by the U.S. Marshals Task Force in n Columbia. 

He was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Richland County.  He’s awaiting transport back to Berkeley County.

“Wright has multiple property crime convictions in his past,” authorities say. He is known to frequent both Charleston and Richland counties. 

He will have a bond hearing on Wednesday, March 28.

“Without the flood of tips we got from the community, identifying Illya Wright would not have been so easy. I want to thank the many citizens who helped with this case and I am glad that we caught him,” Sheriff Duane Lewis said.
