Foul smell in Moncks Corner to continue as crews install new pipes, scrubber

Berkeley County News

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCBD) – Officials in Berkeley County are telling residents around the landfill to expect continued odors for a while.

County officials are in the process of doing additional work to try and alleviate some of the odor coming from a landfill in Moncks Corner.

On Thursday, they installed pipes that will go down into the well system and help suck some of the gas out of the ground.

The county is warning that you may experience odors during the pipe-drilling process. They said residents in the Fox Bank and Oakley Pointe neighborhoods may notice the foul smell.

Crews are installing pipes for a shallow gas well system. This will cause odors to surface.

On Friday, a larger carbon scrubber was installed at the site.  That scrubber controls the odor that comes off the water underground that runs through the landfill trash.

The pipes they are now installing will connect into the existing permanent gas system to be sold to Santee Cooper or burned off.
