BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCBD) – One man is dead after he was struck by a car in Saint Stephen.
Investigators say they believe the man was in the middle of the road when he was hit at about 2:30 a.m. Friday.
“The location was just north of the Diversion Canal Bridge in St. Stephen,” said Berkeley County Coroner, George Oliver.
It happened on Highway 52 near the intersection of McKevey’s Round.
The vehicle was driving southbound from Williamsburg County toward St Stephen.
“And of course in that section right there, there is no light whatsoever. Reflectors are on the road, but this individual was wearing all dark clothing. It would be extremely hard to see in that area.”
It’s a problem you might find in the more rural areas often.
“We’ve had our share,” said Oliver. “In fact, I checked our records and last year we had seven in Berkeley County which were pedestrians struck by vehicles.”
Oliver says you can take steps to prevent becoming a victim.
“Carry some type of light or reflective clothing, stay off the roadway and walk against traffic so that you can see the vehicle approaching. If the vehicle is not yielding or moving over, you have an opportunity to step off to the side a little bit more.”
The coroner’s office is continuing to investigate this death as well as notifying the family and friends of the man who died.
