SAINT STEPHEN, S.C. (WCBD) – A nonprofit and the Town of Saint Stephen are working to change a ballfield and hopefully change the town all at the same time.
It’s happening at Palmetto Park, which is located right in the heart of Saint Stephen. But for the last few years, there have not been regular ball teams playing out there.
Some residents are working to change that.
The bathrooms were torn up and the bleachers needed to be replaced. Just about three weeks or so ago, members of Saint Stephen Growth and Development decided to take this ballfield on as a project.
They have been spreading the word on Facebook and with their neighbors. Work is already being done on the restrooms and bleachers with money and supplies people have donated.
On Sunday, softball games will be held out here. Eleven softball teams and more than 80 players have signed up to play.
There will also be music, food and jump castles. It’s free to attend, but they are hoping to raise much-needed money to continue the effort.
There is also a softball tournament happening Friday night in Macedonia at their middle school ball fields. Players will play ball from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.
Money raised will also benefit helping with this ballfield.
Organizers say this is just the start. They believe they can help make Saint Stephen more vibrant, and hopefully, eventually, attract more businesses and people to the community.
