GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCBD) – A victim has been identified in the fatal suspected road rage shooting near Goose Creek.

Berkeley County Coroner George M. Oliver said 49-year-old Rodney Middleton was shot during an aggressive driving incident between a motorist in a red semi-tractor and a silver or gray sedan on Highway 52 near the intersection of Central Avenue.

It is unclear which vehicle Middleton was driving in at the time of the shooting.

It was during that incident deputies say one of the drivers shot the other before fleeing the scene on Highway 52 near the Strawberry railroad crossing, just north of Goose Creek.

One victim was transported to an area hospital where he later died. The identity of that victim has not yet been released.

Deputies say this is the sixth homicide that has taken place in Berkeley County so far this year.

Sheriff Duane Lewis is asking that anyone with information about the incident, however slight, please call to speak with a detective at 843-719-4412 or Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111.  “We know that there were a lot of motorists driving past the scene between 1:20 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. as the victim was killed by the roadside and we want to talk to anyone who witnessed any part of this tragedy,” the department said.
