Israel Romero, the Democratic candidate for South Carolina superintendent of education, has withdrawn from the race.
Romero informed the chairman of the state Democratic party of his decision with a letter on Wednesday, saying he was withdrawing his candidacy “due to illness.”
The announcement came less than three weeks before the November 6 election. Thousands of voters have already cast absentee ballots.
Romero was running against incumbent Molly Spearman, who is seeking another term in office.
No other candidates are on the ballot.
