SANTEE, SC (WCBD) – One student is recovering and another faces a serious charge after a fight broke out on a Lake Marion High School bus.

It was a disturbing case that happened last Wednesday on the school bus heading home.

According to a police report, Kamell Myers says he was sitting in his seat on the bus when he felt a belt wrap around his neck and then tighten. Much of the fight was captured by the school buses security camera.

He said he looked back to see 17-year-old Jatabious Lee pulling him with the belt. Lee then hit him in the face and they started fighting and others quickly joined in.

Myers said the bus driver was made aware of the fight, but did not stop the bus until the next scheduled stop.

That’s when the victim said one of the suspect’s mothers got on the bus and threatened to fight Myers as well.

Virginia Myers, the victim’s mother, described how she found out about what happened to her son.

“Well, he was on the bus and I guess these kids just decided to lynch him,” she said. “He came home last Wednesday, blood on his shirt, saying ‘mom those kids jumped me, those kids jumped me on the bus.'”

The teenager had to be treated at a local hospital and by a dentist because his braces were messed up in the fight.

“Because they were yanking that belt around his neck, just keep pulling it, he’s trying to pull it too so it won’t pop his neck or whatever… it messed up his mouth… all cut up on the inside, braces fell out,” Myers described.

This has really impacted her son. She says he hasn’t been sleeping since the incident.

“I just want justice. You know, make sure this doesn’t happen to somebody else’s child,” she said.

Jatabious Lee was charged with third degree assault and battery. A judge set his bond at $2,125.
