Charges upgraded for woman who struck, killed bicyclist on King Street

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) Charges have been upgraded for a motorist who struck a bicyclist in downtown Charleston last week.

According to Charles Francis with the Charleston Police Department, Gabriela Bennett, 23, has been charged with felony DUI involving death and reckless vehicular homicide.

The upgraded charges come after the bicyclist, 67-year-old Harry Gilbert, died Tuesday because of injuries he sustained in that collision on King Street back on May 12th.

Bennett was arrested and initially charged with felony driving under the influence after she showed signs of impairment on a field sobriety test which was administered during the investigation into this collision.

According to Francis, Gilbert was traveling lawfully in the roadway when he was struck by Bennett’s vehicle.

“This collision is another tragic example of a traffic fatality that could have and should have been prevented,” said Francis. “There is no excuse for anyone to get behind the wheel while impaired and to not pay attention for others sharing the roadway.”
