JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting that happened Tuesday night on James Island.
Deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 400 block of Woodland Shores Road late Tuesday night in response to a disturbance call.
Sheriff Al Cannon said a woman called 911 about a man with a knife who was threatening to cut her throat.
Authorities arrived and the man, who was in the front yard, ran back into the house. He then emerged with a handgun, and the deputy shot him multiple times.
The deputy has been placed on administrative leave, per protocol, and SLED was called in to investigate.
According to SLED, this was the 26th officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2020 and the third this year involving Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
