County Council discusses future of former naval hospital

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – The future of the former naval hospital in North Charleston is a little clearer today.

In a council meeting Tuesday evening, the county approved $6 million to abate and demolish all the buildings on the Rivers Avenue site.

They also approved a concept plan for the site, which includes a Social Services building that will house DHEC, vital records, and substance abuse services.

The demolition process will not start until May 1st, giving the community time to look into the results from an Urban Land Institute study that will be taking place this spring.

If all goes according to plan, the new facility will open in the fall of 2021.
