Man charged with committing sexual battery against a female child

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A Charleston man has been charged with sexually assaulting a minor under 11-years-old.

According to an affidavit from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, the assaults happened between November 2012 and November 2016 while at a residence on Captiva Row in Charleston.

On March 1st, 2019, the victim reportedly told her mother that the suspect sexually abused her and said she was “traumatized” by the experience.

The child currently resides in Ohio and was taken to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services where a forensic interview was conducted.

During the interview, the affidavit states the victim disclosed that the suspect, identified as 62-year-old Robert Curtis Lanier, Jr., would frequently enter her bedroom and assault her while she tried to sleep.

When questioned about the incidents, the affidavit stated Lanier commented, “Oh, is this the time when we were playing the tickle game and my hand went into her spot?”

Lanier was transported to the Charleston County Detention Center where he is currently being housed. He is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.
