CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – Authorities have charged a man who they say was driving under the influence when he crashed into a West Ashley church early Thursday morning.

According to a police report, Matthew Wayne Deveaux II crashed a silver 2019 Chevrolet Silverado into Graham AME Church which sits at the corner of Ashley River Road and Wapoo Road just after 1:00 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers say they observed the truck which was rolled over on the driver side with heavy front-end damage. They said it also appeared to have caused heavy damage to the front brick portion of the building.

Scarring on the roadway indicated the truck was traveling south on Ashley River Road when it drove off the roadway, into concrete pillars and into the church.

An officer located a single occupant, later identified as Deveaux, entrapped in the vehicle. The report states there were also several open containers of alcoholic beverages observed in the truck.

Once at the scene, firefighters were able to free Deveaux, but he was found to have problems standing steadily. The report says he became argumentative with EMS, fire crews and smelled strongly of alcohol.

During an initial interview process, Deveaux told officers he was coming from Sullivan’s Island but said he had not been drinking that night.

Due to injuries, he was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
