New Johns Island development causing a stir among residents

Charleston County News

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) Johns Island may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of booming cities. However, this may not be your grandmother’s Johns Island anymore.

Developer New Leaf Builders proposed a new development to the Charleston City Council called Hayes Park back in August 2018. The 16-acre project is being proposed to be on either side of Boyd Hayes Road, off Maybank Highway near the Bi-Lo shopping center. It includes a mixed-use commercial center of 13 buildings with retail, restaurant and residential components.

But this is not the case when you talk to every Johns Island resident.

We reached out to some residents on Facebook and these were some of the responses.

Money and traffic were the two biggest issues that residents had with the new project coming to the area.

But not everyone thought the development would be a bad thing for the community. These are just a few of the many concerns from people who live in Johns Island. Randy Craven has lived in the area his entire life and has a very strong opinion when it comes to the development of his hometown. I’m against all of it. I’ve been on this island for 58 years in the same place. It’s too much traffic here, it’s unreal. It takes almost 30 minutes to get from that corner to over there and it’s just unreal, said Craven about the new changes.

Hayes Park did get approved, tonight, by the Charleston City Council during its final design review, so now only time will tell just how much this latest development will affect Johns Island.
