News 2 Investigation: Two School of the Arts teachers removed from the classroom

Charleston County News

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – Two School of the Arts teachers are out of their classrooms so far this school year pending controversy.

One no longer has a job with the school district while the other hasn’t been in the classroom for weeks.

Parents of School of the Arts students told News 2 they are worried about what they described as a pattern of inappropriate behavior on the part of the teachers at the school.

This week, News 2 confirmed the visual arts teacher, Ben Moore, is no longer employed by the school district. The Charleston County School District won’t confirm why.

A North Charleston Police Department spokesman confirmed to News 2 on Wednesday that roughly a month ago the school district asked police to investigate claims of an alleged inappropriate relationship with a student dating back 10 years.

In a statement to News 2 the spokesman wrote, “After a thorough investigation, the case was unfounded because none of the allegations were substantiated.”

The other teacher under investigation is Stephan Whaley, a social studies teacher at the School of the Arts.

He’s now on administrative leave during an investigation of which the school system will not detail.  Parents have reached out to the News 2 investigation team sharing what some considered inappropriate social media posts.

A school district spokesman wrote: “These are personnel matters, and we cannot provide further comment.”
