CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The South Carolina Department of Transportation has released new information about repair work needed the I-526 bridge over the Wando Bridge.
Officials say the work will be performed over the course of six weekends this summer.
During four of those weekends, only a single lane of traffic will close. The remaining two weekends will require reversals like the ones put into place when the snapped cable was first discovered last year.
Summer is a busy time for Lowcountry roads, but SCDOT officials say the work is done best in warm weather.
“We are certainly aware of the traffic impacts that were caused with the emergency closure last May. We are doing everything in our power to minimize that,” said Kevin Turner with SCDOT. “The work we are doing over those six weekends is necessary work, it’s required and it is work we just can’t do in an 8/10-hour closure that we do regularly during the night.”
The SCDOT still hasn’t picked specific days for those closures – but they say they are working with local officials to choose the right weekends.
