MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCBD) – Wando High School is cracking down on how students can get picked up from school.
In the past, students would walk off campus, walk down Carolina Park Boulevard and meet their parents… but that has all changed. But it has left students with trying to find a way to buck the system.
Wando students are now jumping the fence and running through these woods to avoid the parent-pick-up line.
In video provided to News 2, you can see students jumping the fence to get off school grounds. Then you can see them walking through the woods, onto Highway 17 to get picked up.
A student, wishing to remain anonymous, reached out to News 2 and said not all of the students in the videos were picked up by parents.
“Since wando doesn’t allow sophomores to park on school property, students park near by and walk to and from school from there,” he said. ” An administrator told students on the announcements yesterday that students who walk home are to no longer walk out the front of the school, but that we have to walk through that fence onto highway 17.”
He said, administrators had the fence locked Tuesday, so they had to hop the fence.
“Wando also had police and administrators stationed outside school to prohibit students from walking onto Carolina park blvd, so there was no other way for us students to get to our cars but to jump over that fence and walk through the woods onto highway 17,” he said.
He believes the new rules are putting the students in more danger.
“I personally think the new rules are putting students at more danger than before the rules were set in place,” he said. Where we used to walk across 17 there was a cross walk, but since the fence is around a quarter mile away it encourages students to J-walk across highway 17.”
On Sunday, a message went out to parents saying the school would not allow students to walk onto Carolina Park Boulevard and be picked up by parents. The message reads in part:
“With the assistance of the assistance of the Mount Pleasant Police Department we will not be allowing students who are being picked up at dismissal to walk off campus to meet their ride on carolina park boulevard. Students must wait at the front of the main building until their ride comes through the pickup line. Only students who walk home from school will be allowed to walk home from campus. This is for the overall safety of students and drivers.””
Instead, they must get picked up through the pickup line. Only students who walk home are allowed to walk onto Carolina Park Boulevard.
The message says students will be subject to disciplinary action if they do not follow these new rules.
