CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities are investigating both a shooting and stabbing that stemmed from a large altercation on King Street early Sunday morning.
According to an incident report from the Charleston Police Department, an officer was patrolling on King Street just before 3:00 a.m. when they observed a large physical altercation that involved multiple people at the intersection of King Street and Cannon Street.
The officer attempted to break up the individuals who were engaged in a fight on the ground. But in the process, several bystanders began to grab one of the parties, identified as Justin Drayton, and the officer while stating “we got this.”
In the report, the responding officer reported being overwhelmed by the crowd and used pepper spray to help move the crowd back.
At that point, the officer was able to push Drayton off the other individual, who was identified as Aaron Rivers – but in the process, Drayton immediately turned around and kicked the officer in the chest.
Rivers told police he “began to have words” with Drayton while outside of Public House when they got into the intersection, and Drayton struck Rivers in the face.
That is when police say all parties engaged in the large, physical altercation.
Drayton was charged with public disorderly conduct since he created the disturbance and engaged in a physical altercation that drew a large crowd.
The report also stated that several people showed up at the Medical University of South Carolina around 3:00 a.m. saying they had been stabbed on King Street. An investigation revealed the stabbing happened at some point during the large altercation.
Officers later returned to the area on King Street around 3:30 a.m. after receiving reports of shots being fired in the area.
CPD spokesman, Charles Francis, said the shooting occurred between a group of individuals after the altercation on King Street.
A report stated that multiple victims were in the area – all of which were treated on-scene before being taken to MUSC for evaluation.
No suspects have been identified in the shooting. The incident remains under investigation.
