Charleston Police, local leaders to hold Hate Crime Forum Wednesday night

Local News

CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – A hate crime forum will take place Wednesday as part of the Charleston Police Department’s Illumination Project.

Jennifer Pinckney, the wife of Rev. Clementa Pinckney who was killed during the massacre at Mother Emanuel AME in June of 2015 and Holocaust survivor, Joe Engel will speak at the event.

Organizers say the goal of the forum is to create an open discussion on race, gender, sexual orientation, and religion.

“We can begin to at least move into a place of understanding the other person’s perspective and learning from that in order to inform our own,” said Kylon Middleton, leader of the Illumination Project.

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg and Charleston Police Chief Luther Reynolds are also expected to speak.

The forum will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Charleston Museum.
