City of Charleston residents can take advantage of free tax help

CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – If you need a little help filing your taxes, the City of Charleston is teaming up with SC Thrive for five free tax clinics over the weekend.

The tax help is for single filers who make less than $65,000 and joint-filers who make less than $95,000.

Saturday’s clinic runs from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the James Island Recreation Complex.

Trained SC Thrive tax counselors will help ensure those who are eligible learn how to claim federal and state tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit.

If you plan on using the free service, please bring the following forms and information:

Person Information: Home address, phone number, Social Security Number(s), birthdate(s), bank account and routing numbers (fore direct deposit)

Federal Return Forms: Previous year’s tac return (Federal From 1040)

Income Documents: Earned income (W-2, 1099-MISC, retirement income (1099-R, SSA-1099, CSA- or CF-1099-R), investment income (1099-INT, 1099-DIV), misc. income (1099-G, W-2G, alimony payments, 1099-C, 1099-SSA).

Health Coverage Documents: Marketplace coverage (1095-A), employer coverage (1095-B, 1095-C)

Expense Records: Child and dependent care, employment and business, contributions to health savings account, medical and dental expenses, records related to the home (1098 and mortgage credit certificate), education expenses (1098-T and Form 1098-E), charitable contributions, disaster and theft losses, miscellaneous (alimony payments, gambling losses, penalties or earl withdrawals).

Free tax help was offered to residents in Dorchester County over the past week.
