CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The City of Charleston is giving trash scows to the James Island Public Service District.

The announcement comes after several of the department’s trucks were destroyed by fire the morning of September 9th.

Deputy Chief Shawn Engelman from James Island PSD Fire Department told News 2 it started as an electrical fire, affecting three trucks, and spreading to a fourth – all of which were destroyed.

Scows are boats used to transport garbage across waterways.
