Colleton County deputies respond to sinking boat on Ashepoo River

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Deputies in Colleton County were dispatched to reports of a sinking boat in the Ashepoo River around 8:00 a.m.

The victim told dispatch he traveled about a mile up the river before relaxing the boat was taking on a large amount of water but was unable to get to safety due to the boat being stuck on an embankment.

Dispatchers were advised the boat has about one foot remaining before it would be completely submerged under water.

The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, Colleton County Fire Rescue and SCDNR arrived on scene and rescued the man to safety.

They were also able to free the boat from the embankment.

“Today, we didn’t just save a life—we also saved a man’s peace of mind,” said Sheriff Strickland. “Due to the heroic actions of these first responders, he is safe and still able to enjoy his favorite pastime on the water.”
