Coroner identified man in fatal N. Charleston shooting

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The North Charleston Police Department is responding to a shooting incident that occurred approximately at 1:58 p.m.

According to the Charleston County Consolidated dispatch, police are on scene in the 2700 block of West Surrey in North Charleston following a suspected shooting incident.

Spokesman Spencer Pryor with the North Charleston Police Department states officers are currently on scene of a fatal shooting incident at Dorchester Rd and West Surrey Dr.

Anita Hasert, Deputy Coroner with Charleston County states, Damon Middleton, 23, of North Charleston died on scene as a result of a gunshot wound. NCPD investigating. 

Middleton was discovered inside of a vehicle, that crashed at the intersection, suffering from gunshot wounds. Middleton was pronounced deceased.

According to the report, there was five African-American males in the complainants year. Officers arrived on scene and met with the caller, who stated that her boyfriend was a victim in the shooting on W. Surrey Drive earlier in the day, as stated in the report.

The report states, the caller said the five African-American males where in her yard and that she was scared because they were acting suspicious. Authorities were advised by Middleton’s girlfriend that the suspect, who goes by the street name “Swerve” that he needed to leave.

It was stated in the report that “Swerve” got back into a dark colored four door sedan and left with the other males, but then returned to the house and two other males came up to the door and stood on the porch for a few minutes.

According to the report, the girlfriend told authorities that the residence had security cameras which captured a couple of the male suspects on footage.

The North Charleston Police Department investigation is ongoing.
