MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has identified two victims of a fatal crash that happened off Rifle Range Road.

According to Deputy Coroner Anita Hasert, 19-year-old Keith Schemm of Isle of Palms and 18-year-old Elizabeth Daniel of Mount Pleasant were pronounced dead at the scene of a single vehicle crash early Sunday morning.

Schemm was a first-year Citadel student, F-Troop class of 2022 and Daniel a senior at Wando high, with major involvement in ROTC. The crash happened after the two went to Wando’s prom together.

Dr. Sherry Eppelsheimer, the Wando High School Principal released this statement:

The entire Wando High School family is coping with the loss of one of our students and a recent graduate over the weekend. Elizabeth “Libby” Daniel was a senior, and Keith Schemm was a 2018 grad. We are heartbroken, and our thoughts are with the families of these two students, as well as the many friends and faculty members who are affected.

Libby was very involved in Wando’s Air Force JROTC program as Cadet Core Commander. Keith graduated last year and was attending The Citadel.

We ask that you respect the privacy of those who loved and knew Libby and Keith and respect the privacy of the Wando community during this difficult time.

The Charleston County School District Crisis Team has joined with our school counselors at Wando to provide extra support for students and staff in handling this tragedy.

The Awendaw-McClellanville Fire District responded to the crash in the 2600 block of Rifle Range Road near Hamlin Road.

Authorities said the vehicle was heading southbound on Rifle Range Road when it exited the roadway and struck a tree.

Mount Pleasant Police Department’s Traffic Bureau is investigating this collision.
