Coroner’s office identifies victim in fatal auto vs. bicycle crash

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Police in North Charleston are investigating a fatal auto vs bicycle crash that happened early Tuesday morning.

According to NCPD spokesman Spencer Pryor, officers responded to Rivers Avenue near McMillan Avenue in reference to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicycle.

Upon arrival, officers located the bicyclist in the median who was pronounced dead shortly after.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office later identified that victim as 60-year-old Thomas Anthony Washington.

An initial investigation revealed the driver of an SUV was traveling eastbound in lane 1 Washington suddenly entered the lane.

The driver of the SUV reportedly tried to avoid hitting him but was unable to avoid the collision.

Deputy Coroner Brittney Martin said Washington died of blunt trauma.
