CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston Police say a 5 year old went to a neighbors house to return borrowed scissors before a man inside the home shot her.
That man has been identified as Jimmy Deandre Henderson, 31. He surrendered to Charleston Police around 5:30 p.m. Friday at police headquarters.
Henderson is charged with aggravated assault and battery and weapons possession during a violent crime. He appeared in bond court Saturday and remains in jail at the Al Cannon Detention Center after being given a $120,000 bond.
Family members of the victim attended bond court, and the child’s grandfather spoke.
“This is a grown person versus a five year old,” he said. “Just being normal, knocking on the door, just being normal and a firearm, just boom, boom and she gets injured. That’s my granddaughter, I could’ve lost her. If it was me, it’s different, I’m a grown man, I can defend myself, that’s a grown man versus a five-year-old.”
CPD says the child knocked on the door of apartment 3c to return a borrowed pair of scissors and Henderson was inside of that apartment. Police say he fired his gun one time as he opened the door. The fired bullet went through the edge of the door, and struck the victim’s right thigh.
That’s when the child’s baby sitter immediately tended to the victim and rendered aid by escorting her into the neighboring apartment, according to the arrest affidavit. Moments after the gunshot, the baby sitter said Henderson told them, “Don’t call the police!” That’s when Henderson fled the area prior to CPD arriving on scene at Ashley Arms Apartments at 1100 Crull Drive.
The victim was transported to MUSC and was diagnosed with a “through and through” gunshot wound on her right thigh.
