CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A portion of I-26 westbound was temporarily shut down Monday evening as crews responded to a multi-vehicle collision.

According to the South Carolina Department of Transportation, I-26W near mile marker 205 was shut down shortly before 7:00 p.m.

As of 8:30 p.m., the North Charleston Fire Department said that one lane had reopened. Large wreckers were still on scene to clear the vehicles as of 10:15 p.m.

Traffic cameras showed traffic at a standstill as of 10:15 p.m. Photos sent by News 2 viewers showed drivers getting out of theirs cars as they waited for the road to reopen.

South Carolina Highway Patrol remained on scene as of 10:40 p.m.

By 11:15 p.m., the traffic appeared to be moving freely.

There is no indication of when the roadway will fully reopen.
