Deputies searching for student who fled after loaded gun found in backpack

Local News

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a high school student this morning after they found a loaded gun in his backpack.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office called the school and asked them to pull the student aside so they could question him about some recent break-ins and thefts.

When the school resource officer and an administrator found him they decided to search the student’s backpack and as they did, he took off.

The search revealed a loaded handgun and authorities immediately put the school on lockdown. The school resource officer chased the student out of the building but lost track of him near Alliance Drive.

The officer called for help and a K-9 team searched the area. Despite the effort the teen still got away.

Investigators say it is still possible that the student could be armed. Police say he didn’t threaten anyone, however officers say they are prepared to respond if a threat emerges.
