Developers hope to build homes on 450 acres in Summerville

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCBD) – The Dorchester County Planning, Development and Building Committee is recommending a second reading of a zoning request.

Developers are looking to turn 450 acres near the Summerville airport into a single-family residential district.

Right now, homes can technically be built on the land off West 5th North Street. The issue is how closely those houses must be built in order to save space.

“Right now we say your home must be a certain size lot, but what we’re allowing them to do is put maybe a larger home on a smaller size – cluster them tighter together so that ultimately they enable us to preserve more green space,” said David Chinnis, chairman of the Planning, Development and Building Commission.

There is no word yet on when that second reading will take place.
