Dorchester Co. opens second shelter at Woodland High School

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) –  At 8:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 13, Dorchester County opened a second evacuation shelter at Woodland High School located at 4128 US Hwy 78, Dorchester, according to the news release.

The pet-friendly shelter remains open at DuBose Middle School, located at 1005 DuBose School Road, Summerville, SC 29483. At the time of release, there were 60 evacuees at DuBose Middle School and 13 pets.

The maximum capacity at DuBose Middle School is 404.

The maximum capacity at Woodland High School is 529.

Residents evacuating to a shelter should pack minimally, bringing only the essentials bedding personal hygiene products, a form of identification, all medications, important documents, a change of clothes, food and water for 3-4 days, according to spokesperson Tiffany Norton.

Residents who feel they may need to relocate to a special medical needs shelter should call the SCDHEC triage phone line at 1-800-578-2031. 

Shelters at Summerville High School and St. George Middle School remain on standby to open if/when the need arises.

Pets

The Pet-Friendly Shelter at DuBose will only accept crated, small, domesticated animals. At least one family member must remain on premise.

Residents who would like to utilize the pet shelter will be responsible for bringing all pet supplies including, but not limited to the below:

  1. Leash
  2. Vaccination Records
  3. Pet Food
  4. Water & Food Bowls
  5. Sheet or Blanket to cover Kennel
  6. Litter and Litter Box
  7. Medication (if needed)
  8. Training Pads for kennel

Shelter Transportation

If residents are in an evacuation zone and do not have the resources to leave the area, Dorchester County in conjunction with community partners will provide free transportation to open public shelters only.

Shuttles began running at 8:00 AM today, Thursday, September 13, 2018. Today is the last day the shuttle will run, Norton added.

If residents are unable to get to a predesignated pick-up location, they are encouraged to contact the Citizens Call Center at (843) 832-0393 for assistance with alternate transportation plans.

Convenience Sites

All Dorchester County Convenience Sites are open until 12:00 PM today, Thursday, September 13, 2018. At noon today, all sites will close and remain closed until after post-storm inspections have been completed.
