Dorchester County hiring consultant for Ashley River Historic Overlay District commercial development

Local News

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Dorchester County is one step closer to commercial development in the Ashley River Historic Overlay District.

The historic district was created in 2007 to preserve the area.

Strict guidelines make it difficult to create commercial development within the district. So last year, a new 5th subdistrict was created to allow for commercial space in the area near Cooks Crossroads, at the intersection Highway 61 and Highway 165.

Dorchester County Council recently decided to approve funding for a consultant who will develop design guidelines for the subdistrict so that any stores that come to the area fit the character of the historic district.
