SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – Two Lowcountry high school students have started a program to mentor at-risk middle school students.

Ashley Ridge High School seniors Jaheim President and Darius Smith launched the school’s new “Rise Up” program this week.

Earlier this year, both received full scholarships to the College of Charleston and $20,000 checks while on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

On Thursday, participating students toured Ashley Ridge to see available opportunities.

President and Smith say they hope the programs inspire incoming students to get excited about high school.

“Rise up is symbolic for rising above life’s obstacles or hardships that you think may not be able to overcome at the moment and we’re geared towards the most at-risk children at each middle school that are feeding into Ashley Ridge High School at this moment,” said President and Smith.

Both used $10,000 from Ellen and Cheerios to launch the program.
